Jersey Girls Food Tours' Fall Chef Showcase on Tuesday, October 28, 2014

Jersey Girls Food Tours presents their first annual Fall Chef Showcase on Tuesday, October 28th at Art House Productions (136 Magnolia Avenue in Journal Square) from 7 to 9 pm.

Guests will be treated to a selection of 12-15 dishes from many of Jersey City's talented chefs (GP’s Restaurant, Battello, Orale, Left Bank, VB3, Lighthorse Tavern, Satis Bistro, BROA, White Star Bar, Razza, Cholita Dessert Bar, Milk Sugar Love, Hudson Cakery, ModCup Coffee and Urban Foodie Catering), as well as dessert and coffee.

There will also be live music provided by NJCU Jazz Quintet, art exhibit OBSOLESCENCE on display and a selection of spirits from NJ Beer Co, Don Q Rums, Barrow’s Intense Ginger Liqueur, Jersey Wine Merchants and Selections de la Viña.

Tickets are $75 with all profits going to benefit The Sharing Place.  All ages are welcome!

Restaurant Crawl at Yelp’s Passport to Newport Event Tomorrow, Tuesday, October 7, 2014

Yelp is throwing their first ever Yelp’s Passport to Newport event tomorrow, Tuesday, October 7th.

The event is a a restaurant crawl along the Jersey City waterfront in the Newport section of Jersey City with 8 participating: restaurants

Battello
Bertucci's
Cosi**
Dorrian's
Fire & Oak
Komegashi Too
Loradella's Family Pizzeria**
Skylark On The Hudson

Each participating restaurant will be serving tastes of their signature dishes and a fall-inspired cocktail using Tito’s Handmade Vodka and attendees will be able to vote for their favorite drink in a contest at the end of the night (**alcholic cocktails will not be served at these locations).

Koro Koro Opens at 538 Jersey Avenue, Featured in Village Voice

After a successful Kickstarter campaign Koro Koro has now opened at 538 Jersey Avenue between Columbus Drive and Newark Avenue (steps away from Choc O Pain).

In addition to a selection of soups and salads, Koro Koro offers a wide variety of Japanese rice balls (including several vegan options) such as Indian, Miso Beef, Cuban and Spicy Salmon.

Signs of Progress at Porta on Newark Avenue

Porta's newest location at 135 Newark Avenue is beginning to take shape!

Although the pharmacy sign still stands, the former Fenny Pharmacy building is now completely unrecognizable with a stylish wood exterior and roof deck.

Porta is now projecting an opening date in October 2014.

Korean Restaurant Ahri's Kitchen Coming to 227 Seventh Street in Hamilton Park

It was recently announced on JCList and Reddit that a new Korean restaurant, Ahri's Kitchen, will be opening at 227 Seventh Street which is at the corner of Seventh and Erie (current location of the 7th Street Deli).

Ahri's Kitchen will serve authentic Korean dishes (take a sneak peek at their menu on their website) and will be BYOB.

They are aiming for a soft opening December 1st and will launch a Kickstarter campaign on September 1st.

Blue Lotus Now Open in Hamilton Park, Groupon Available

Blue Lotus, an Indian restaurant, has opened in the spot previously occupied by Ginfi at 131 Erie Street in Hamilton Park.

Groupon is offering a deal at Blue Lotus: $27 for a meal for two or $54 for a meal for four.  There was a take-out option that has already sold out.

Panera Bread Opens at the Newport Centre Mall

As previously reported, Panera Bread is now open at the Newport Centre Mall in Jersey City.

The new Panera is not in the food court but instead located on the first level of the mall (in-between the Foot Locker and Lenscrafters).  There is ample seating with tables outside the entrance as well as booths inside the restaurant.

The dining options at the Newport Centre Mall have been steadily improving lately with the addition of this Panera, Dunkin' Donuts, Teavana, Starbucks and a renovation of the food court to come this fall 2014.

Hudson Restaurant Week Starts on Monday, July 28 to Friday, August 8, 2014

Hudson Restaurant Week starts their Summer Week on Monday, July 28th and will run until the following Friday, August 8th.

This summer's participating restaurants include quite a few Jersey City dining options:

3 Forty Grill, Battello, Bistro La Source, Boca Grande, Box, Edward's Steakhouse, Fire & Oak, GP's Restaurant, Hamilton Inn, Komegashi, Komegashi Too, Liberty House Restaurant, Liberty Prime Steakhouse, Maritime Parc, The Merchant, Porto Leggero, Porto Lounge, Satis Bistro, Skylark on the Hudson and Sky Thai

During restaurant week participating restaurants will offer special prix fixe menus ranging from $13-20 for lunch and $25-40 for dinner (menus are available on HRW's website).

As in previous years, restaurant week is a great opportunity to try new restaurants or revisit an old fave!

Downtown Jersey City Bar and Restaurant News and Updates

A lot has been going on in the bar and restaurant scene in downtown Jersey City, happening too fast to keep the site as updated as Twitter, so here is a quick recap to keep everyone in the loop:

Greene Hook (Formerly Cityside Bistro)

The folks at Light Horse Tavern are opening a gastropub at 70 Greene Street in the spot that used to be Cityside Bistro.  Via nemobeatz, founder of Lafayette Nextdoor (check it out!).

Raval at 136 Newark Avenue (Formerly Synergy)

Satis' owner to open a wine and tapas bar.  Via nemobeatz, always in the know!

Departed Soles Brewing Company

Jersey City is getting its own brew!  Departed Soles Brewing Co., a new company that brews gluten-free & regular craft beers, will be making its home at 150 Bay Street 2A.

Taphaus Biergarten (Crystal Point)

Work on a new beer garden, Taphaus Biergarten, is underway on the ground floor of Crystal Point (2 Second Street).  No expected opening date, although their direct NYC waterfront views will surely make it a must-visit watering hole.  Via reddit.

Porta

Porta, known for their Asbury Park pizza restaurant and dance club, is still at work on their Jersey City location at 135 Newark Avenue. Opening date is expected to be next month, July 2014.  Check out this photo of their pizza oven being delivered!  Via @corinne_v.

The Big Straw NJ

The Big Straw's new tea room and cafe at 276 First Street is also still under construction, opening date expected mid-to-end of July 2014.  But you can still catch them at Groove on Grove to try their extensive variety of bubble teas!

Koro Koro Rice Ball Cafe

A new sign for Koro Koro Rice Ball Cafe has popped up at 538 Jersey Avenue (between Columbus and Newark, a couple doors down from Choc O Pain).  Via ‏@stevieshamrocks.

ME Casa Food Truck

ME Casa now has a food truck!  Known for their highly praised Puerto Rican and Latin American dishes served at their restaurant at 356 Varick Street, ME Casa now has a mobile kitchen.  Keep your eyes peeled for their bright yellow truck!

Talde Jersey City and Carrino Provisions (8 Erie Street)

Still under construction, but floor plans and pricing for the apartment rentals at Telco Lofts (also at 8 Erie Street) are now online.

Update (6/11/2014): The Jersey Journal is reporting a couple of new dining options at the Newport Centre Mall including Panera Bread and Potatopia in the dining pavilion currently undergoing renovations until October 2014.

Update (6/13/2014): BROA Cafe at 279 Grove Street also appears to be very close to opening, possibly within the next couple of weeks or so.

Update (6/16/2014): The new wine and tapas place at 136 Newark Avenue is going to be called Raval according to It's Jersey City.

Battello to Open on Tuesday, March 11, 2014

Battello, the new restaurant at 502 Washington Blvd (formerly Michael Anthony's), is ready to open their doors to the public starting this Tuesday, March 11th.

As previously reported, Battello underwent a complete renovation designed by Brunelleschi Construction, the design, development and general contracting firm of HGTV's Kitchen Cousins.

Liberty Humane Society's 4th Annual Wine Tasting at VB3 Next Sunday, March 2, 2014

Liberty Humane Society is hosting their 4th annual Wine Tasting at VB3 Restaurant and Bar next Sunday, March 2nd from 5 - 7 pm.

A donation of $35 includes wine tastings of select red and white wines, antipasti dishes and gourmet pizzas with proceeds to benefit Liberty Humane Society and their work helping homeless animals in our community.

Tickets can be purchased in advance online here or tickets will likely be available at the door.

Also, in case you missed it, there are still a few days left for LHS's Valentine's Day adoption event!

Adoption fees are reduced to only $14 during this event (ending this Friday, February 28th).

Mod Cup's Cafe Soft Opening Today and Grand Opening on Saturday, February 22, 2014

Mod Cup Coffee's new cafe is nearly ready to open at 479 Palisade Ave in the Heights.

They will have a soft opening starting today, Thursday, February 20th from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm with their grand opening to come on Saturday, February 22nd.
